The Accelerating Universe

Last week, I was fortunate enough to go to a great lecture on the Accelerating Universe presented by 2011 Nobel Laureate for Physics, Professor Brian Schmidt.  He spoke about his research and how his team came to their conclusions about the universe accelerating.  It was definitely the highlight of my rather bleak week (mostly spent sick in bed).  Professor Schmidt was a great public speaker, I learnt about the difference between theorists and experimentalists within the field of astrophysics, and that some astrophysics still like to include Pluto in the list of planets in our Solar System (go Pluto!).  I had to leave early, but question time at the end was conducted through twitter #uqastro.

UQ's School of Mathematics & Physics calendar always has some great event on (like the Quest for Extremely Large Telescopes or the Transit of Venus events that I went to last year).

Professor Schmidt will also be offering a free online astronomy course at ANU through edX.org next year (read about it here and here).  MOOCs are really coming into their own at the moment which is so exciting for someone like me who loves to learn and study!   I really enjoyed the Intro to Astronomy course I did through coursera.org/Duke University over the Christmas Holidays (I still have a couple of units to finish).  Astronomy has got to be one of my favourite things to learn about, I am such a space nerd at heart!

Brisbane Flood v2

Hoping everyone is prepared for the flood/possible flooding at today's King Tide.  We've been without power for 3 days and spent yesterday afternoon preparing for any flooding under the house.  We've had to be quiet inventive with our storage.

To stay prepared I've been following the QPS twitter, keeping an eye on the Brisbane City Council website here and here and have signed up for the Early Warning Network.  Fingers Crossed...

Quilts at QAGOMA

While I was browsing the QAGOMA website, I had a look at what's coming up.  They always have great programs, which is one of the reasons I'm a QAGOMA member.  From 15 June - 22 September, QAG is exhibiting, in collaboration with the Victoria and Albert Museum (London), 'Quilts 1799-1945'.  The V&A museum sell beautiful fabrics on their site and I'm hoping that the exhibition might bring some to the QAGOMA gift store.

To compliment the 'Quilts 1799-1945' exhibition, from 13 July - 6 October, QAG is showing another quilt exhibition, this time of a Brisbane local, 'Ruth Stoneley: A Stitch in Time'.  Ruth Stoneley had a quilting shop in highgate hill and the exhibition includes her quilts and also shows some of her processes.

Getting to know Brisbane with Google Maps

Google Maps is great for creating your own map of things you love.  I created this one a while ago with all my favourite places to eat and drink in Brisbane.  I had almost forgotten all about it but have now updated it (and have also added to my side bar). I will endevour to update it everytime I find somewhere new I like.

The Olé tapas bar in Southbank serves the most amazing white sangria which is perfect for this time of year but you know what's even better?  White Sangria Popsicles.  Recipe can be found here over at The Weekend Edition (which I highly recommend subscribing to for a what's what in Brisbane).

Eat Drink Awards 2012

The EAT/DRINK awards for Brisbane were announced last week on The Weekend Edition.  So many of my favourites were acknowledged.  Congratulations to The Scratch, Southside Tea Room and all the other winners.  I'm always looking for a new place to have breakfast so I will have to try out Willow & Spoon!

Brisbane City Guide

I love my city and anything that promotes it.  A Brisbane (Mini) City Guide was published at The Design Files.  It is very Valley/New Farm centric but still a list of wonderful places!

There a definitely a few places I would add in this area (Tippler's Tap for a start, review here) but it is a mini guide.  Maybe I should do one of my own :)

50 Things To Do If You Live In Brisbane

I love Brisbane, I really do.  There seems to be so much to do that I couldn't possibly fit it all in.  I found this list over at The Urban List and was thinking of creating my own.  There seem to be so many great websites that detail the what's what in Brisbane every week.  Apart from The Urban List, there is The Four Thousands, The Weekend Edition via Map Magazine, Meetup,  and this great book called 'Hide and Seek Brisbane'.  I initially discovered the Hide and Seek books when I was planning my first solo trip to Melbourne a few years ago.  It allowed me to explore the city and find some great places and things to do and the Brisbane one is the same.

If your looking for things to do or places to go in Brisbane I would highly recommend all of these sites. They all have great mailing lists as well so when Wednesday/Thursday hits, your mailbox is filled with all the things you can do in Brisbane over the weekend.
