Pattern Wednesday #13

Well I haven't been making one a day and the one I'm currently working on is quite intricate so I'm so still not finished, but better some than none hey?  I'm actually not really happy with any of my patterns, I feel like I only had a chance to work on them (for what seemed like) 5 minutes.  They could all definitely be worked a bit more but here they are:

Turning photos to colour

So this is a work in progress but I'm quite happy with the results so far so decided to share it. Do you remember this tutorial to colourise historical Black & White photos?  Well I had a go at a photo of my sister and I when we were little.  I haven't done the clothes or the background, and I'd like to work on the hair a little bit more (blond hair is tricky!) but I like where it is going.  I have some family history photos that I would like to try next but one step at a time!  Here is the before and after.

Before:

Sign Painters

I love hand-painted signs, they are often so beautiful and meticulous but I see them less and less.  Which is why, I am so excited about this new documentary Sign Painters coming out.  It looks like a great narrative and the sign painters seem like fun characters.  Hope they'll be a Brisbane screening (like The Startup Kids).

Easter Origami

How cute is this tutorial for an origami bunny ahead fo Easter?  Think I might pull out my origami paper and give it a whirl.

Screen Printing Workshop

I participated in a 1-day screen printing workshop with Angela from Milli&Fink on the weekend.  I had such a great day, I learned a lot and got to take away a few pieces that I'd printed.  I was amazed at what we accomplished in 1 day!  Angela was a great instructor, I highly recommend these workshops, no wonder they sold out fast!

I'll post a few more photos later in the week of my finished pieces, but for now, here are a few quick shots I took on the day.

Clockwise from top: Original cat sketch, cat design on a screen, cat print on paper, second design on a tote bag.

Clockwise from top: Cupcakes and lamingtons provided :), setting up for printing, Angela demonstrating gold leaf using a screen, screens and prints drying.

Colour Swatch

I'm halfway through an Illustrating course from Nicole's Classes, and was inspired by the colour swatch palette that our tutor, Alma Loveland uses.  I generally create a new palette for each design, often using Pantone colour swatches as a base, which can be time consuming now I'm doing a lot more illustrating and pattern work.  So, I created a similar colour swatch of about 200 colours which has already made my life easier for you to download :)

Pattern Wednesday #12

So, I decided last Wednesday to join in the #365pattern challenge.  I have only done three patterns since then (which I guess is more than the previous week's one), but still not the seven I was aiming for.  It has been a big week for my family so my side projects have taken a bit of a back seat but I am hoping to create more things in the coming week.

Here are my patterns:

75 Parisiennes

75 Parisiennes is a collection of images by French photographer, Baudouin, of Parisienne women.  The colour schemes are amazing, and I love how many of the photos have cats in them (one even looks like the cat pushed the woman down the stairs).  See them all here.

Pattern Wednesday #11

I spent many hours on the weekend trying to create patterns - it appears that practice does make perfect and I am a little out of practice.  Inspired by the 'Galaxy' by Alma Loveland pattern (see more here), I tried to create an astronomical pattern but was largely unsuccessful.  I worked and re-worked it but no cigar.  I might try another approach later but for now I'm going to leave it - this pattern is driving me a bit crazy.

I also attempted a second pattern (archery pattern below), which I thought could be improved. So, I left it for a few days and reworked it for a few more options. I think I might join in the #365patterns challenge and get my pattern skills on :)

Kittens for a Monday

I think I could post about cats everyday of the week but I do try to keep at least a partial lid on the crazy-cat-lady.  Here are three kitten-related items to help with Monday blues.

1) I came across Vine Cats which pull all the kitten goodness from Twitter and Vine in one place, it's great.  (Reminds my of the cat feed from unbaby.me in my facebook news feed).

2) 38 Weird of Wonderful Cat Tattoos

3) This great ad from Cravendale.  The clicking cats remind of the Jets from West Side Story :)
